DETROIT --

Detroit officials announced Friday that fire commissioner James Mack and deputy commissioner Seth Doyle have been let go.

Mayor Dave Bing cited poor communication a recent investigation into a report that a firefighter stole $110 from a homeowner while responding to a call on Oakman Street for the firings.

"This is a disappointing reflection of internal disconnect within the fire department," Bing said. "It's plagued them for way too long."

He said Fred Wheeler would serve as interim deputy fire commissioner while a national search for a new leadership team in the fire department was under way.

"The day is over when people can just kind of do what they want to do and go back to do the things they did," Bing said. "This administration will not tolerate that."

Bing named Mack as commissioner in September of 2009.

The commissioners are responsible for establishing and enforcing policies relative to all of the department operations.
