AUBURN, Wash. --

King County fire investigators continue to search for the cause of a fire that took the life of a new grandmother in Auburn Sunday morning.

Neighbors witnessed the flames engulf a backyard shed before firefighters quickly arrived at the scene around 11:30 a.m.

Crews don’t know what caused flames to engulf the back yard, just that gasoline inside the gardening shed may have fed the flames. When they discovered the woman in her back yard, they immediately knew the case was serious.

“What we found were severe burns to almost 100 percent of her body,” one firefighter on the scene said.

She died on the way to the hospital.

The woman was the ex-wife of one of the firefighters in King County Fire and Rescue, the unit that responded to the fire. The same firefighter said the woman was a new grandmother and celebrated Christmas with her first grandchild.
