Crews responded to the two-alarm fire at a house on 838 Dundee Avenue at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Firefighters entered the smoky basement, but it wasn't long before a Mayday was called.

"We don't know what happened, and we haven't had a chance yet to look into exactly what the details were, but we have a feeling that it might have been a flashover," department spokesman Marc Messier said.

The department's RIT team met the firefighter at a small window. He was unable to reach the stairs, which may have been due to a partial collapse of the main floor, according to the report.

The firefighter was pulled out of the small window. He was injured, but was conscious and speaking to paramedics while they took him to a waiting ambulance on a stretcher.

He was transported to Queensway Carleton Hospital for smoke inhalation and first-degree facial burns.

Crews initiated a defensive attack from outside of the home and had the fire under control by approximately 3:10 p.m.

The home was ruled a total loss, and damages to the structure were estimated at $200,000 and damage to contents at $50,000.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
