WINOOSKI, Vt. --

Police have confirmed that a young man, 26-year-old Kaldon Goodwin has died at the hospital after firefighters tried to save him from an early morning apartment fire in Winooski.

According to police, Goodwin lived in one of the downstairs apartments and was unconscious when he was pulled from the burning building.

Crews were called at 2 a.m. Wednesday to a blaze at an apartment building on the corner of West and Pine streets.

Neighbor Gary Savard said he heard a huge explosion at the apartment building, and that flames rapidly consumed the building.

"We do know that there were two different good samaritans ... and really did a great job of pounding on doors and trying to get the attention of the people that reside in those residences," said Winooski Police Deputy Chief Rich Benoit.

Six other people lived in the building.

On Wednesday evening, police continued investigating what caused the fire.
