FORT PIERCE, Fla. --

A Fort Pierce motel caught fire Tuesday morning.

The fire started shortly after 7 a.m. at the Days Inn off Okeechobee Road. Fire officials said a portion of the motel was under renovation.

Gela Adelman was a guest at the motel visiting from Kansas when she was told to evacuate.

"It's unimaginable that you're in a hotel, a motel, in a city you're not even familiar with on a vacation and it's in flames," Adelman told WPBF 25 News.

Adelman said she was in her pajamas when she was told to evacuate. She said she had to get dressed, grab everything and get out.

Many residents were in their pajamas when they were told to evacuate.

"You never imagine it's going to happen where you're at," Adelman said.

Demetrius Iverson, another motel guest, said he was thankful that he was able to see the fire and get out in time.

It took about 40 firefighters to battle the flames.

"Basically, within a few minutes, it spread throughout the whole entire building itself," witness Bob Clarke said.

No injuries were reported.

The damage from the fire was estimated at $4 million.
