Woman, Child Killed in Georgia Fire

JEFFERSON, Ga. -- A woman and her niece died in a fire that destroyed a home in Jackson County, firefighters said. The fire started around 3 a.m.Saturday, trapping both victims inside a home on Johnson Mill Road in Jefferson, firefighters told Channel 2’s Rebecca Lindstrom at the scene. Officials identified the victims as Mary Nicole Cassell, 33, and 9-year-old Winter Wright. Five others were hurt in the fire and treated for smoke inhalation and burns, according to Lindstrom.

Firefighters were working to determine what started the fire. State Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John Oxendine said the home did not have smoke detectors.
