COLUMBIA, S.C. --

One Columbia-Richland firefighter was killed and another was injured Saturday after being hit by a car while responding to a brush fire on Interstate 20.

The crew was on its way to the fire on I-20 at Clemson Road in Columbia at about 2:15 p.m.

Interim Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said Chance Hyatt Zobel and Larry Irving were struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on I-20.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a Chevy Impala was read-ended by a van. The impact sent the car into the median where the firefighters were standing.

The two firefighters were rushed to the hospital, but Zobel died from his injuries. Irving was listed in critical, but stable condition on Sunday.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
