A San Diego fire truck became stuck after its tires fell into a trench on Monday night, according to City News Service.

The fire truck passed over steel plates on Alvarado Road around 11 p.m. when it fell in.

"They could feel the plate kind of giving way at the bottom of it," San Diego Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Dan Froelich told the news service. "The traction of the truck (gave) way as it was falling into the hole."

The rear part of the truck, which weighs close to 48,000 pounds, sank a couple of feet.

A maintenance crew and a towing company worked to remove the vehicle and minimize the damage and by 2 a.m. were able to use the outriggers to lift the rear end of the truck.

Wood was placed underneath the wheels and the towing company used a cable to safely remove the vehicle, according to the report.

The amount of damage was initially unclear, but Froelich said it appears to be minor.

The city and the fire department will examine the construction area to make sure it was properly secured.
