Firefighters in West Maui said a brush fire that started there Monday has burned 6,200 acres.

High winds have made the job harder, officials said. Twice, firefighters have come close to containing it, only to have hot spots reignite.

At this point, Hawaii County officials said they believe the fire is under control, but said they were concerned about a number of Kamehameha Day events that will bring people to West Maui on Saturday.

They urged drivers to call Maui police for information at 986-1200 for information on road closures on the Honoapiilani Highway.
