CHARLOTTE, N.C. --
An accident that happened Monday afternoon created a real disaster on Pineville-Matthews Road in the evening.
A sinkhole opened up after a driver of a U-Haul rental truck took out a fire hydrant around 2 p.m. causing a washout under the road and flooding to the area, firefighters said.
A total of 15 people were evacuated from surrounding homes as a result of the flooding.
Both northbound lanes of Pineville-Matthews near Johnson Road are closed and traffic is being diverted while crews work to repair the sinkhole.
