Sinkhole Delays Response to Fatal Ga. Fire

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A 44-year-old woman is dead after an apartment fire in Norcross, according to the Gwinnett Fire Department. The fire broke out at Barrington Hills apartments on Chelsea Park Lane, Gwinnett Fire spokesman Eric Elberly said. Elberly said firefighters were briefly delayed because they had to go around an un-repaired sinkhole to get to the burning building. He said they did manage to pull her out of the building, but she died shortly after arriving at an area hospital.

A 44-year-old woman is dead after an apartment fire in Norcross, according to the Gwinnett Fire Department.

The fire broke out at Barrington Hills apartments on Chelsea Park Lane, Gwinnett Fire spokesman Eric Elberly said.

Elberly said firefighters were briefly delayed because they had to go around an un-repaired sinkhole to get to the burning building.

He said they did manage to pull her out of the building, but she died shortly after arriving at an area hospital.

The victim, who has not been named, was turned over to the Gwinnett County medical examiner. Investigators are listing the cause as "under investigation undetermined" pending results of an autopsy, Elberly said.
