Indy Police Officer Accused of Arson

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis police officer was arrested on Thursday, accused of setting fire to an east side apartment building, police said. Jesse Russell Jr., 31, was preliminarily charged with two counts of felony arson in two fires set at the Lakeview Terrace Apartments, near 21st Street and Mitthoeffer Road, on May 14, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported. Sources close to the investigation told Rinehart that Russell set the fire and then called police from a nearby pay phone.

An Indianapolis police officer was arrested on Thursday, accused of setting fire to an east side apartment building, police said.

Jesse Russell Jr., 31, was preliminarily charged with two counts of felony arson in two fires set at the Lakeview Terrace Apartments, near 21st Street and Mitthoeffer Road, on May 14, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

Sources close to the investigation told Rinehart that Russell set the fire and then called police from a nearby pay phone.

Russell's fingerprints were found on the pay phone and a can of gasoline was discovered in his truck, the sources said.

Sgt. Paul Thompson said Russell, a three-year veteran of the force, resigned after his arrest. He said a mug shot would not be released for investigative reasons.
