COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa --

Council Bluffs firefighters confirmed that a 7-year-old boy died in an house fire early Monday morning.

Crews were called to 705 Hillcrest Avenue around 2:30 a.m.

Council Bluffs Fire Chief Alan Byers said that the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Fire investigators said the boy, Alex Buzzetta, was sleeping in a back room with a 2-year-old girl. The girl somehow made it out of the house safely. The girl's parents were sleeping in the second-floor of the house and jumped to the ground. The woman broke her ankle in the fall, firefighters said.

The girl's father ran back into the house to get the boy, but was driven back by the thick smoke, investigators said.

Firefighters said Buzzetta's father and his girlfriend were also sleeping in the house and got out safely.

Buzzetta's was found after searching the house once the fire was out. The house is a total loss.

Buzetta was in second grade at Lewis and Clark Elementary School, a school spokesperson said.
