Fire Destroys Vt. Barn, Kills 160 Cows

WALDEN, Vt. -- Firefighters responded to a report of a barn fire at the Michaud property in Walden at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to a report of a barn fire at the Michaud property in Walden at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

When the Walden Fire Department arrived, they found fire coming from the barn and some of the structure had already collapsed. Mutual aid was called in to Marshfield, Cabot, Berlin, East Montpelier, St Johnsbury, Hardwick, Craftsbury, Danville, Greensboro, Peacham, Woodbury, Glover, Wolcott and Plainfield fire departments. Also at the scene were the American Red Cross, Washington Electric, and several local rescue departments.

The Walden fire chief called the Vermont Fire Unit to speak with an investigator. Two members of the Vermont State Police Fire Unit were called to the scene and spoke with first responders, the property owner and employees.

The investigation showed the cause of the fire to be undetermined but not suspicious. The barn was considered a total loss. Approximately 160 dairy cows were killed in the fire. At the time of the fire, there were no employees in the barn. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
