MESA, Ariz. --

A 1-year-old Mesa girl was in stable condition and behaving normally after she was found face-down in a toilet at her home Monday morning, according to a Mesa Fire Department spokesman.

The girl and her 3-year-old brother were apparently playing around the toilet at the home near Baseline Road and Loop 101 when the girl fell in, her father told firefighters.

He said he heard the commotion and ran to the bathroom, where he found her head-first in the toilet, and then called the fire department to have her examined. She was transported to a Mesa hospital for observation.

The brother had been flushing the toilet intermittently before the father found the girl, and she appeared to have been submerged at some point, Mesa fire Capt. Forrest Smith said. It wasn't clear if the girl's head was in the toilet when the boy flushed, Smith said.

Smith said the girl was conscious and alert when crews arrived and there was no sign of fluid on her lungs.
