N.C. Wildfire Injures FFs, Burns Homes and Destroys Firefighting Vehicles

JACKSON COUNTY, N.C. --

A fire in Jackson County, N.C. burned more than 100 acres, injured three firefighters, and destroyed two homes and two firefighting vehicles.

The fire burned along Bradley Branch Road between Whittier and Dillsboro on Wednesday. More than 50 people were forced from their homes. The evacuation order was lifted at 1 a.m. Thursday.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene. A third was airlifted to a hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition.

A smoke chaser truck and a mini-pumper truck were destroyed and another fire department vehicle was badly damaged.

Firefighters controlled the flames and expect Thursdays rain to extinguish the fire.
