LYNDEBOROUGH, N.H. --

Firefighters and other emergency crews continued to monitor a propane truck that had rolled over on Tarn Road Thursday.

Officials said the truck was loaded with nearly 3,000 gallons of propane when it slid down a hill and tipped on its side Thursday morning.

Thirty residents in the 16 houses on the road were ordered to evacuate as a vapor cloud began to form.

"We didn't really think it was that serious at first and then I could smell the propane," said Lisa Pritchard, a resident. "They came back and said 'You really need to leave.' They shut off our electricity. They told us not to use the phones."

About 100 emergency workers from surrounding towns were called in. Officials said the problem was that the leak was actually under water and it was difficult to get to the source.

Officials believed they would need to pump as much propane as possible into another truck and burn the rest.

An emergency shelter was set up at town hall. Officials said they didn't know when people would be allowed back in their homes.
