HOUSTON --

Four people, including two young children, died during an apartment fire in northwest Houston, KPRC Local 2 reported.

At about 2 a.m. Friday, firefighters were called to the Walnut Creek apartments on Green Plaza Drive.

When they arrived, firefighters found two adults and two children inside one apartment. Fire officials said it did not appear that they were trapped inside. The adults were found in the living room and the children were found inside a bedroom.

Friends said the man, 44, and the woman, 24, had been dating a few months. Investigators said the children were 2 and 4 years old and belonged to the woman. She also had a third child, who was staying with his father during the fire.

Fire officials said they believe the fire started in that apartment, which was the only one affected by the fire.

Firefighters performed CPR on the victims and transported them to nearby hospitals, where all four were pronounced dead. Their names have not been released.

Neighbors were shocked.

"It's said," neighbor Charlotte Whitaker said. "It's just not a good day. It's hard, because to see them and to just know that no one will ever see those kids again, it's going to be a hard thing."

An arson team is investigating the cause of the fire.

No firefighters were injured.
