Two firefighters are lucky to be alive after a garage exploded while they were in it last night (Jan. 11), according to KSFY-TV.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. just west of Baltic as crews responded to reports of a natural gas leak.
Dell Rapids Assistant Fire Chief Jason Turner said the firefighters were sent into the structure to monitor the air inside.
"It just went up in flames and exploded on them," he told the news station. "We had the garage door open and everything; it just took off and blew up."
Turner said both firefighters escaped, uninjured.
"They're lucky they escaped without any injuries," he said. "They are up and walking around; they're doing good."
Recently, the department has had to respond to a spat of fires and weather conditions have made thing difficult for crews.
"We're holding together just fine," he said, adding, "It's been cold."
