HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Pa. --

Bitter cold temperatures caused icy conditions at the scene of a fire Monday night in Harrison Township.

The blaze broke out inside a Spruce Street home at about 6 p.m.

No one was home at the time, but firefighters rescued two dogs.

"The weather is obviously playing a factor for us," Chief Jeff Balog of the Hilltop Hose Fire Department told Channel 11 News. "We're putting water out. As fast as we're putting it out, it's creating icy conditions for us. We're working with out township road crew to try to get salt back into our location."

The chief said the fire started in the basement and quickly spread to the first floor.

The cause is still being investigated.
