SENECA, S.C. --

Police said a doctor intentionally set a fire in his Seneca office Friday morning.

Seneca police and fire departments responded to a smoke alarm at the Office of Nephrologists and Internal Medicine at 135 Professional Park Drive.

The building was found to be on fire and emitting heavy smoke. The fire was extinguished quickly and the cause was determined to be arson.

Upon investigation of the scene and the use of the Seneca Fire Department's new arson dog, an arrest was made. The owner of the office, Dr. Darryl Sugar, was charged with second-degree arson and making a false statement in support of a claim to obtain insurance benefits for fire loss.

Sugar is being held at the Oconee Detention Center awaiting bond.

The office's damage was estimated to be about $200,000.
