HOUSTON --

A 3-year-old is being called a hero for saving his grandmother from a fire, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston firefighters said flames ripped through home on Springdale Street near Woodwick Street in northeast Houston at about 1 p.m. Monday.

The family lost their home, but a boy named Demarte prevented them from losing a member.

"Yeah, I'm proud ...the Lord is good," said Lurline Henson, Demarte's great grandmother. "I'm so proud that they got out of there."

Demarte smelled smoke, saw the flames and woke up his grandmother, Linda Haynes.

"I didn't know the house was on fire," Haynes said. "My grandson told me, 'Grandma there's smoke grandma.' And I thought he was playing. And he said, 'Grandma, there's smoke!' And when I looked up, the whole house was smoked up. When I got outside, that's when I found out my house was on fire!"

Haynes shared the wooden home with her two sons and two grandchildren.

The family said there is little property that could be salvaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
