A Longport volunteer firefighter is recovering after he collapsed at the scene of a house fire on March 13 and was revived with an AED, according to the Shore News Today.

Rescue workers used an automated external defibrillator to revive Capt. Richard Hirsch, 58, who suffered the medical emergency while battling the morning blaze in the 2800 block of Atlantic Avenue.

He collapsed and stopped breathing after exiting the structure, Chief Lavon "Lefty" Clayton told the newspaper.

Longport Police Officer Chris Ricciotti was nearby when Hirsch collapsed and immediately began respiration. Maragate Firefighter Chris Maher began chest compressions while Longport Firefighter Michael Simon ran to the ambulance and grabbed the AED.

When the AED administered the shock, Hirsch regained his pulse and woke up gasping for air.

He was transported to Shore Memorial Hospital and later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, where he remains and is expected to return home in a few days.
