FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --

The driver of an 18-wheeler was rescued after his big rig hit a concrete column and overturned on Interstate 595 Friday afternoon, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the tractor-trailer was moving east on I-595 when it went off the road and struck a concrete bridge support that holds up southbound U.S. 1, then came to rest in a median, strewing construction materials as it went.

Firefighters worked to extricate the driver, a 58-year-old man. He was taken to Broward General Medical Center in serious condition after suffering head injuries and having diesel fuel splashed in his eyes.

Fire officials said the department's hazmat team went to the scene to foam down about 100 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled from the truck's tanks.

One lane of I-595 in each direction was shut down during the cleanup. FHP is investigating the crash.
