DETROIT --

A 1-year-old child has died after a fire at home in Detroit.

Daveon Grant would have turned two years old in January.

Flames broke out Sunday at about 6 p.m. at the home near Saratoga Street and Hayes Street on the city's east side.

Authorities said the child's aunt was babysitting him when the fire started in the basement.

Both Grant and his aunt were in an upstairs room, police said.

Investigators said the aunt tried to save both herself and the toddler, but Grant ran away when she lifted up the window.

The aunt was found unconscious near the window and Grant's body was found in a closet.

The child's aunt was hospitalized with smoke inhalation.

No one else was hurt.

Firefighters said the house was severely damaged by smoke and water and the family will not be able to return for weeks.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but police believe a faulty clothes dryer may be to blame.
