LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. --

A mother is being treated for smoke inhalation after she ran back into her burning home to look for a child who turned out not to be there, Broward County firefighters said.

Firefighters said the 44-year-old woman and her two children, ages 6 and 7, were asleep at the home when the fire broke out. Fire officials believe the blaze began in a back bedroom of the home.

The mother and two children escaped the burning house. Firefighters said they believe the woman went back inside the home to look for a teenager, who was not home.

All three have been taken to Plantation General Hospital. Firefighters said the mother's injuries were more serious due to smoke inhalation. The children are expected to be OK.

Fire marshals are working to determine what caused the blaze.
