SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. --

Firefighters battled a blaze Thursday at a San Joaquin County duplex.

The fire was reported shortly after 8 a.m. at 5149 South Kaiser Road.

Morning winds pushed the flames. The fire destroyed four apartments, damaged a fifth and threatened other nearby buildings.

The biggest challenge to firefighters was a lack of water. Crews said there were no fire hydrants nearby and were forced to use water that was trucked in to get a handle on the blaze.

Firefighters from at least four departments responded.

The American Red Cross is providing shelter for six or seven families who lost their homes in the blaze.
