MANCHESTER, N.H. --

Kent Clark couldn't hear the fire alarm or call for help, but he managed to get his family out of a burning apartment Thursday morning.

Flames broke out at 57 Trahan St. in Manchester at about 4:30 a.m. in a residence where Clark, his mother, fiancee and 4-month-old daughter were sleeping.

Clark is deaf, but he said through an interpreter that he woke to find the room filled with smoke and fire.

He said he tried to wake his mother, but she did not respond, so he alerted his fiancee and got her outside.

Clark said he went back in the apartment and passed his infant daughter out through a window.

He said that when he located his mother, her hair was on fire and he managed to drag her outside.

"He says that he woke up and the whole place was in flames, and he just busted out windows to drag his mom and his baby out," Clark said through a translator.

Kent Clark was able to drag his mother out of their burning apartment. She suffered life-threatening injuries.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. Marlene Clark, 57, was taken by helicopter to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston with what were described as life-threatening injuries.

"Mom was unconscious. She was out," Kent Clark said through the translator. "He freaked, pulled her. Fire all over her face. That's pretty much it. Dragged her out of the house."

Family members said Marlene Clark suffered second- and third-degree burns around her face and head. Kent Clark, his fiancee and their young daughter were taken to a hospital for evaluation and were released. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Late Thursday afternoon, fire officials determined that the cause of the fire was careless disposal of smoking materials. Fire officials said there were oxygen tanks in the home that might have helped fuel the fire.

Two other families who lived in adjoining units were displaced and have been moved into different homes.
