Five Hurt In N.C. Boarding House Blaze

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. --

Hendersonville police said that five people suffered minor injuries when a boarding house caught fire on Thursday morning.

The fire happened at the Caldwell Inn at 719 Maple St. at about 7 a.m.

Police said that when officers arrived they evacuated 22 people. They said that five people were taken to the hospital after they fell while trying to escape the blaze from the top floor of the building using a ladder. Those people were treated and released.

Capt. David Adams said that the fire is being investigated as an arson, although an official cause has not been determined. He said that a person is being questioned in connection with the blaze, but no one has been charged with a crime.

The boarding house is located in the towns Historic Seventh Avenue District.
