NASHVILLE, Tenn. --

Firefighters were at the scene of a house fire Wednesday afternoon in east Nashville, but it appeared to be too late to save the home.

One firefighter was hurt after he fell on steps inside the house and was transported to Metro General Hospital for precaution. His condition was unknown, but officials said he was able to walk out of the house and into an ambulance.

Another firefighter, whose condition is also unknown, was transported to Skyline Medical Center.

The call went out to the home on Shelby Avenue at 19th Avenue at about 10:30 a.m.

Officials said the fire started in the basement, and a man was sleeping inside at the time. The smoke detectors woke him, and he made it out safely.

The home was destroyed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
