Heavy smoke was showing from the sanctuary and basement.

WALHALLA, S.C. --

Investigators with the State Law Enforcement Division along with fire investigators in Walhalla are trying to determine what started an overnight church fire.

Firefighters say they got a call about a fire at the St. Luke Methodist Church around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The church is located on East Main Street in Walhalla.

Firefighters say when they arrived on the scene there was extremely heavy smoke in the church's basement and in the back of the sanctuary.

The St. Luke congregation started about 150 years ago, according to the church's Web site.
