GALAX, Va. --

Two adults and a young child died in a house fire Monday morning at mobile home park off Highway 89 just south of Galax.

Galax Fire Chief David Hankley said someone called 911 at about 8:15 a.m. to report the fire.

When crews arrived at the scene, the home was engulfed in flames. Fire officials said neighbors who saw the fire tried to rescue the family, but were not able to get inside because the doors were locked.

Officials identified the victims as Stephen Lafferty, 39, Amy Stoneman, 28, and their 4-year-old daughter.

It wasn't immediately known what started the fire, but officials said it did not appear to have been set intentionally.

The victim's bodies have been sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for autopsies.
