LAKEWOOD, Wash. --

A Pierce County woman was reported in critical condition Sunday night after being rescued from an apartment fire earlier in the day.

Captain Jenny Sharp of the Lakewood Fire Department told KIRO TV News that neighbors called 911 to report a fire in the woman's apartment at 8810 John Dower Road SW at 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters from Lakewood and University Place responded and found heavy smoke and flames pouring from a second story window of the apartment building.

Neighbors told firefighters that the woman was trapped inside. Rescuers pulled the woman from the fire and took her to the hospital.

Captain Sharp said there were no smoke alarms in the apartment.

The fire was out by 3 p.m. The cause was under investigation.
