EDGEWATER, Fla. --

A fire described by firefighters as suspicious burned 100 acres and threatened several houses in Edgewater Sunday.

Officials in Volusia County said the blaze sparked in an area west of U.S. 1 and east of Interstate 95 in Edgewater.

Firefighters battled to save more than 30 homes near the flames throughout the day Sunday, Local 6 reported.

"Firefighters were able to stop the blaze about 100 yards from a home," a division of forestry worker said. "But had they not, there is no doubt (the) home would've gone up in flames."

Neighbors said they noticed about six children in the area at the time of the fire.

Fire investigators are trying to determine if the fire was an accident or a deliberate act of arson.
