MIAMI --

Fire destroyed a house in Miami early Monday morning, leaving 13 people homeless.

Officials said three families were living inside the house at Northwest First Avenue and 42nd Street. The Red Cross confirmed that it is assisting two of the families with food, clothing and lodging.

Officials said no one was inside the home at the time of the fire.

Chopper 6 over the scene early Monday showed flames shooting from the house's roof and billowing smoke that could be seen from miles away.

Firefighters said they believe the blaze started on a mattress, but the cause is still under investigation.
