ATLANTA --

Two children have died in a house fire early Wednesday in Atlanta.

Atlanta Fire and Rescue spokesman Captain Byron Kennedy says the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

He says firefighters began fighting the fire but also were trying to rescue the two children, who were still inside. The two children were pulled from the house.

They were taken to a local hospital where they were declared dead.

Several other children in the house escaped.

Neighbors tried to battle the fire with garden hoses before firefighters arrived.

One of the children who survived told firefighters a child playing with a lighter started the fire.
