Three women were taken to a hospital as a result of a fire at an east-side Indianapolis apartment building late Monday night, officials said.
Firefighters helped several people who were trapped on balconies at the Kingston Square apartments near 34th Street and Shadeland Avenue, Indianapolis fire Capt. Kevin Witt said.
Information on the conditions of the women who were sent to the hospital and details on their injuries weren't available.
The fire started just after 11 p.m., apparently in the kitchen area of a unit that had the most damage -- $40,000 worth -- officials said. Other units had smoke damage.
Information on the fire's cause wasn't available.
Witt said smoke prevented several people on the second floor from leaving their apartments without assistance.
"They opened their doors to the mezzanine area and couldn't make it out because the smoke was so thick, so they went out to their balconies," Witt said.
