NEW YORK-- A 9-year-old boy was killed Sunday in a late night fire on Staten Island, the Staten Island Advance reported.

Thomas Monahan Jr. was in cardiac arrest when he was pulled from his second-floor bedroom at 49 Princewood Ave. He was pronounced

dead at 1:45 a.m. at Staten Island University Hospital, the Advance said. Thomas Monahan Sr., his wife, Maria, and their

8-year-old daughter, Gabrielle, got out of the house unharmed.

The father tried to get inside to rescue his son, neighbors told the paper. Even as flames took over the first floor, Monahan

climbed a ladder and broke a second-floor window but he was unable to get inside.

Officials believe the fire started in the basement or first floor of the home and then spread upstairs, the Advance reported.
