LOS ANGELES --

At least eight people were injured Tuesday when a school bus collided with an SUV and sheared off a fire hydrant in Palmdale, authorities said.

Five ambulances were requested for eight to 10 patients, said Los Angeles County fire Inspector Ron Haralson. The injuries were described as "mild to moderate," according to KNBC.

The collision was reported at 8:42 a.m. at North 35th Street East near East Avenue R, Haralson said.

Haralson said he didn't know the extent of patients' injuries or what caused the collision.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were investigating the crash, Haralson said.
