The victims were a toddler and his uncle.

ARBUCKLE, Calif. --

A young boy and his uncle died in a fire in Arbuckle on Tuesday morning but the child's mother managed to escape to safety, authorities said.

The blaze was reported at 7:30 a.m. in a fifth-wheel trailer parked next to a home on Pine Street.

Those who died were identified as 2-year-old Raymond Perez and 21-year-old George Perez.

Fire officials said the boy and his mother were inside the trailer when the fire started.

She and the boy tried to escape through a window. The window collapsed, with the woman falling out of the trailer and the boy remaining inside.

Neighbor Norma Reyes said the mother ran back and forth yelling for help.

"There was nothing that she could do," neighbor Norma Reyes said.

A neighbor said George Perez may have gone inside the trailer to rescue the boy, at which time the trailer exploded in flames.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
