OKLAHOMA CITY --

A father's quick action saved his family after an apartment fire Sunday morning.

Benjamin Cook woke up smelling smoke at his mother's apartment at 122nd Street and MacArthur Boulevard.

"We couldn't see two feet in front of us," he said. "It was so thick with black smoke."

Firefighters said the flames started on the apartment's balcony and were in danger of spreading because of high wind.

"I put a towel over my son's head, and (another on) my wife and daughter, and I sent them on their way, he said. "Then, I put a towel over my head and when I was waking up my mom, I put a towel over her face, as well."

Cook's mom was treated for smoke inhalation but is expected to be OK.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
