MELBOURNE, Ky. --

Emergency crews worked Wednesday afternoon to rescue a horse that fell into a pond.

The quarter horse, Pencil, became stuck in the pond shortly after noon in the 7400 block of state Route 8 in Campbell County.

Crews requested a large harness to pull the animal from the cold water, and managed to pull the horse to safety before 2 p.m.

After it was pulled from the water, the horse ate some hay and did not appear to be injured.

The horses owner said he was driving a snowplow all night for a landscaping company and did not notice the animal was missing until later in the day.

I was there when he was born, when he came out of his mother's womb, so we're kind of like buddies, said Doug Oldiges, the horses owner.

Ice and snow covered the pond, and the horse apparently walked partially onto the ice to get a drink before falling into the water.
