Milwaukee Man Killed in House Fire

Aug. 18, 2008

MILWAUKEE --

A 48-year-old Milwaukee man is dead after a house fire early Saturday.

Investigators said that the fire started at about midnight in the bedroom of a duplex near the intersection of Fernwood and Springfield avenues.

"Our neighbors, Paul and Paula, came knocking on the door around midnight telling us the house was on fire," Ninette Mitchell, who lives below the unit that caught on fire, said.

Mitchell said her family made it out OK but she remembered hearing a noise upstairs before her neighbors roused her from bed. She said it didn't sound like fighting or yelling, just loud movement.

Neighbors said they saw the upstairs tenant after the blaze, who told them it was another, unknown man who died in the fire.

Mitchell said her family doesn't know the man who lives above them. They said he moved into the apartment in July and had caused a lot of trouble since then.

Neighbors said that they've complained of loud noises and talking at late hours.

Mitchell said the damage to her unit was confined to a storage area in the basement.

Police have not confirmed the identity of the victim. Investigators have not yet ruled whether the fire was suspicious or criminal in nature.
