Pennsylvania Community Rallies around Department

The department was unable to pay an insurance bill, but its money problems appear to be resolved for now.

Much to their relief, residents in Windber Borough and surrounding communities learned Tuesday they will still have a fire department.

The Windber Fire Department was unable to pay in full an insurance bill due Tuesday, but its money problems appear to be resolved for now.

At a special meeting on Monday, borough leaders, firefighters and community members all made a commitment to fund the fire department. Council will vote next month on giving the fire company the money it needs to stay operational.

In the meantime, the fire department contacted its insurance company with regard to the $13,000 bill. The two came to an agreement that the fire department will send several thousand dollars in donations with the understanding that the policy won't be cancelled.

Community members have pledged to help, including the Windber Area Senior Citizens group which offered to loan the borough the remaining money needed for payment.
