GREENWOOD, S.C. --

Greenwood deputies say a registered sex offender has been arrested for setting fire to a mobile home.

Sheriff's Investigator Jeff Graham says 30-year-old Samuel Thomas Moss had been a volunteer firefighter.

Deputies say he set the fire so that he could respond first and win respect from other firefighters.

Authorities say Moss had applied to become a full-fledged firefighter but was turned away because he's a sex offender.

Moss was convicted of committing a lewd act on a child under 16 in 1995.

Moss has been charged with two counts of arson and one count of willfully burning lands. Investigators say they also think he set several other recent fires in the area.
