Roof Collapses in Three Alarm Supermarket Fire in New York

Firefighters rushed out of a vacant Staten Island supermarket as the roof collapsed during a blazing third-alarm fire.

(New Dorp, SI-WABC, October 12, 2005) - Firefighters rushed out of a vacant Staten Island supermarket as the roof collapsed during a blazing third-alarm fire.

Eyewitness News has learned the flames tore through the roof of the former Waldbaums at 454 New Dorp Lane in the borough's New Dorp section just before midnight. Firefighters rushed out of the blazing building when the roof suddenly collapsed.

They then had to fight the third-alarm fire from the outside. It took hours to put out the blaze.

All of the firefighters escaped serious injury.

The supermarket was vacant at the time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
