ANDERSON, S.C. --

A retired Clemson University professor and his wife died Saturday evening in a house fire.

The fire started around 6 p.m. at the couple's home on Westminster Drive in Pendleton.

Firefighters said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed.

Investigators said they found the body of Eugene McClain and his wife, Rosa Iris McClain.

Both were 81 years old.

Our crews spoke to officials who said firefighters pulled Eugene McClain's body out of the study through a front window.

His wife was found on the floor in a front room.

The Anderson County coroner believes the two died from smoke inhalation, but autopsies are scheduled for both Monday.

Officials believe the fire started with an electrical shortage in the roof, but the cause was still under investigation Sunday.

A tanker responding to the fire wrecked on Bishop Branch Road while headed to the scene.

The Anderson County fire chief said the truck came too close to the edge of the road and overturned.

No one was hurt in the wreck.
