Firefighters said someone leaving burning wood unattended in his yard caused the fire.

Several St. Johns County residents were evacuated when a brush fire threatened their homes Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters said someone leaving burning wood unattended in his yard caused the fire on Adams Acres Road, off county Road 214.

The fire consumed about five acres and damaged at least one home before being brought under control through the efforts of local firefighters and the Florida Division of Forestry.

Homeowner Bill Hill returned to his property to find a barn and a shed destroyed and the siding damaged on one part of his home. Hill said this is the second fire on his property in recent years.

"When you live back in the woods so, sort of, stay away of things, all the time," Hill said. "You expect stuff like this to happen."

Firefighters left the area Sunday night saying they would be back Monday to check on any hot spots.
