Delaware Fire Truck Collision Kills One

An 84-year-old man is dead, and six firefighters suffered minor injuries after the firetruck they were in crashed into a car near Lincoln at about 4:30 p.m. today, police said.

The accident has closed the intersection of Del. 38 (Clendaniel Pond Road) and Del. 224 (Fleatown Road) in Sussex County, police said. The intersection was expected to open around 8:30 p.m.

Deleware State Police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Oldham said the 84-year-old man was driving his Chysler Pacifica north on Del. 38. and had the right of way.

Witnesses said the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Company Engine 75 was travelling east on Del. 224, approaching a stop sign at the intersection between Ellendale and Lincoln and did not make a stop.

The fire engine, carrying six volunteers, was responding to an automatic alarm at a residence on East Holly Drive. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
