A spokesperson for the fire department said the family who lived there was evicted last week.
Des Moines fire investigators are examining the remains of a house fire on the city's east side. Firefighters were called to 254 East 17th Street on Sunday morning at about 8:55. They called in the investigators after questioning the source of the fire. A spokesperson for the fire department said the family who lived there was evicted last week. The fire started in the living room which the spokesperson said was cluttered. A sign on the outside of the home near the front door, which firefighters said was placed there by the city of Des Moines, said the house was uninhabitable. The Polk County Assessors website said the home was assessed for $44,200. It lists Geraldine Madison as the home's owner. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
